The blast was carried out at about 2.30pm today to establish the correct explosive charging requirements for their demolition.

In January a 600ft tall chimney was demolished at the site as part of the ongoing work.

All the cooling towers are scheduled for explosive demolition later this year and further details will be provided nearer the time.

The demolition of the site is expected to be completed this year.

The power station closed in 2016, and there are plans to build 2,300 homes, commercial buildings and a school on site.

A school for more than 1,400 pupils proposed on the site has been handed Government funding.

The free school will open in September 2023 and will eventually cater for 1,400 pupils and a nursery.

The all-through school will be run by the John Taylor Multi Academy Trust.
