Church deacon recognised for community work
A deacon of a Staffordshire church has been awarded a community's group first-ever prize for community work.
Sue Culver, of Penkridge Methodist Church, was given the Roger Nicholls Community Contribution Award by the Penkridge and District Round Table.
The award - named after one of the group's founding members Roger Nicholls - was presented by chairman Tim Rowlands.
Over the past couple of years, Sue has worked tirelessly in the community.
In 2018, she put Penkridge on the international map by decorating the church with a sea of poppies for Remembrance Day.
This year, she organised the sewing of gowns for NHS workers, helped with a local food bank, raised funds from the manufacture and sale of face coverings and supported those in need.
Mr Rowlands said: "This year has been tough. We will remember it for all the wrong reasons. But Penkridge and District Round Table would like to ensure the memory of our founder is not forgotten.
"We've decided to create a new annual recognition in his honour. Each year we will present the Roger Nicholls Community Contribution Award.
"I can think of no better first recipient of the award than Sue Culver."
