Trains travelling to Lichfield disrupted due to vehicle crashing into railway bridge

Rail passengers travelling to Lichfield faced disruption to their journeys due to a vehicle crashing into a railway bridge.

Trains travelling between Shenstone and Lichfield faced disruption on Monday afternoon

The collision took place on Birmingham Road, Lichfield, at around 2.20pm on Monday.

As a result, trains running between Lichfield and Shenstone were travelling at a reduced speed.

In a statement issued at around 3.56pm, a spokesman for West Midlands Railway said: "Trains are currently running at a reduced speed between Lichfield and Shenstone in Birmingham Road, Lichfield.

"Minor delays to services are expected until safety inspections of the bridge are complete."

The rail company confirmed at around 5.09pm that services were running as normal.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to the scene of the collision where crew discovered one patient upon arrival.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a car that had collided with a bridge and a van on Birmingham Road at 2.20pm, one ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene.

"On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, who was the driver of the car. He was assessed and discharged on scene uninjured."

Bus services were also impacted by the collision, with the X3 having been temporarily diverted.

National Express West Midlands announced at around 4.25pm that the X3 was running a normal line of route as the road had re-opened.
