Emergency services were called to reports of a fire in a flat at Ridware House, in Hobs Road, in Lichfield, at around 1pm on Thursday.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Lichfield, Tamworth, Rugeley, Barton-under-Needwood and Burton all attended the scene. They extinguished the fire on the third floor of the building and also assisted with the safe evacuation of the residents.

A woman suffering from smoke inhalation was taken to Queen's Hospital in Burton for further treatment.

As a result of the fire and damage to the building, the 32 flats have been evacuated – and Lichfield District Council is arranging emergency accommodation.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.

A spokesman from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "As a result of fire damage and fire safety compromises, specifically to the fire alarm system, integral fire doors and the communal stairwell, the building has been evacuated for the safety of the residents.

"We are working with Lichfield District Council, who are arranging emergency accommodation for residents from the 32 flats.

"An investigation into the cause is underway."
