Paramedics restart man's heart at roadside after Lichfield crash
A motorist almost died after he crashed into a lamppost in Staffordshire this morning.
Paramedics managed to restart the man's heart after the crash on Eastern Avenue in Lichfield at 8.30am.
He was found in a critical condition by a passing ambulance three minutes after a 999 call was made.
The crew began resuscitation before they were joined by other paramedics who administered advanced life support.
Once resuscitated, the driver was taken to Royal Derby Hospital where he is receiving specialist care.
Although an air ambulance was called to the scene, he was taken on blue lights to hospital by land ambulance.
West Midlands Ambulance Service also two ambulances and two paramedic officers to the crash site.
A spokesman for the service said: "A passing ambulance came across the incident three minutes after the 999 call was made to find the driver of a car, a man, in a critical condition.
"The crew commenced resuscitation on scene and, once joined by ambulance colleagues, they worked as a team to administer advanced life support and managed to restart the man’s heart.
"The man was taken, in a serious condition, by land ambulance on blue lights to Royal Derby Hospital for further specialist care."
