Edward, who has been involved in Motorsport for 32 years, said he wanted to give something back to the community with his Ole Racing Team.

The team, which races high-powered go-karts, is based at the Midland Karting centre in Lichfield.

Edward, 51 – the son of veteran hill climb champion Alan Cottam – said: "The team will enable talented youngsters who have the skills and ambition but not the financial backing, the opportunity to compete at national level in karting competitions."

Edward's son Oliver, 12 – who has already made a name for himself on the racing seen – also helps his father with the training.

Edward cited 13-year-old Harrison Neale as one of the club's big prospects, saying he was very excited at the prospect of being able to pursue his dream.

"He has put in a lot of effort during his one-to-one training sessions at Midland Karting," he said.

Harrison said he really enjoyed being able to race his kart.

"I feel excited and very privileged to have the opportunity to race for Ole Racing team," he said.

Edward is seeking sponsorship from companies who would benefit from the worldwide exposure of having their logo on all team karts, suits and helmets.

"The sponsorship will enable the drivers to receive scholarships to cover all costs associated with their training, karts and competitions," he said.

He said six of his pupils will take a test on April 17, and if they pass they will get the opportunity to race at Whilton Mill in Northamptonshire in May.
