During a recent safety inspection of the multi-storey car park, it became clear that some of the fixings of the cladding panels on the external façade were coming loose, the council said. And remedial action is therefore required to protect the public who might be passing close by.

The work will involve removing all of the white cladding panels from the multi-storey car park structure.

The council said that the contractor will undertake the work in adherence with the government's social distancing guidance to ensure the safety of both the workforce and the public.

As the panels are not structural there are no plans to completely demolish all or part of the building, at this stage.

Councillor Gordon Alcott, portfolio holder for town centre regeneration said: “This is necessary work that needs to be undertaken as soon as possible and does not determine longer terms considerations over the future of the multi-storey car park.

“The council had little choice but to close the multi-storey car park in August 2018 for health and safety reasons, a decision which was then followed by an urgent need to repair an adjacent service ramp, work which was successfully concluded.”
