The 'Save the Prince of Wales Theatre, Cannock' petition was started after the aforementioned theatre was earmarked for destruction by Cannock Chase council last week.

The proposal to close the theatre was announced by the council last month as part of efforts to close a £1.5 million budget gap for the years 2025/26.

Since the petition was started, the theatre and the Museum of Cannock Chase have entered into a four-day consultation period to decide whether the sites will close.

Now, only days after the petition was launched, more than 16,000 people have added their signatures to the list, meaning the campaign has achieved more than half of its 25,000 goal.

In an update to the petition page, the group said: "A huge massive thank you to everyone who has already signed our petition.

"We are forever grateful for everyone who has taken the time to support us during these awful times. Please keep fighting, sharing and showing Cannock Council that they cannot make ridiculous decisions that do not reflect what their constituents and users of the theatre want."

The petition quickly gained popularity with residents, reaching over 10,000 signatures in only one day.

Signing the petition, performer Daisy Connock, said: "I performed at this theatre numerous times throughout my childhood and have the most wonderful memories of those days.

"I would be devastated to see it go."

If it is decided that the sites will close, both venues may be closed as early as early as April 2024.

Talking about the petition Jayne Webster said: "This would be such a huge loss to the community and creative arts industry. We have seen many fabulous shows here.

"Our daughter performed at this theatre from the age of five, gaining confidence in front of an audience, inspiring her to undertake a career in professional dance and musical theatre,  now training in London.

"Without this vital local venue, the council are taking away the opportunities for children and young people to develop their talents within the performing arts. Consider the impact on future generations!"
