Tributes after Rugeley Town Council vice chairman Mick Grocott dies

Councillor Mick Grocott, vice chairman of Rugeley Town Council, has passed away, the authority has said.

Council meetings scheduled for tonight and tomorrow have been cancelled as a mark of respect.

Councillor Grocott was first elected to Rugeley Town Council in 1999, and served as chairman in 2003, 2009, 2010 and 2015.

Rugeley Town Council posted on Facebook saying: "It is with great sadness that Rugeley Town Council announces the passing of much respected Councillor Mick Grocott.

"As a mark of respect, the council meetings arranged for tonight and tomorrow will be cancelled.

"Our thoughts and condolences go to Mick's wife Julie, and their family."

Councillor Grocott was a former Cannock Chase District councillor from 2000 and served as a cabinet member for sports and leisure on the council.

Councillor Neil Stanley said: "He was a driving force behind the building of Rugeley swimming pool and the expansion of the leisure centre.

"Outside of the council he was formerly chairman of Etching Hill Lions Football Club, which had youth teams throughout the town.

"He was born and raised in Rugeley and used to work for Armitage Shanks."
