The work at Cannock Chase Leisure Centre will see the gym refurbished and a cinema-inspired indoor cycling studio built on an existing bowling green.

The investment, which comes after a huge overhaul in 2012, shows a commitment to encouraging residents to be more active, according to council chiefs.

Work will begin in the autumn, with a refresh of existing gym and studio areas and three new spaces being created in place of the bowling green.

A new cycle studio, functionary training area and multi-purpose space will also be among the improvements made.

While work takes place, the gym will be temporarily relocated to the bowling area to allow the existing gym area to be renovated.

The council says disruption will be kept to a minimum and once completed, the renovated gym will reopen to customers and work will then begin on the three new spaces. The overall project is set to be completed by spring next year.

Councillor Christine Mitchell, portfolio leader for culture and sport at Cannock Chase Council, said: “I am very excited that work is due to start on the improvements at Chase Leisure Centre.

"Residents of Cannock Chase will be able to use the latest gym equipment and take part in virtual classes.

“One of our priorities at Cannock Chase Council is community wellbeing and these improved leisure facilities in the district provide residents with even more opportunities to have healthy and active lifestyles and assist us with our aim.”

The new cycle studio will feature the latest equipment and include Les Mills immersive cycling experience ‘The Trip’, which uses leading audio and visual equipment.

The new functional training area will feature a fixed functional rig, accessories and cardio equipment, while a new multi-purpose space will provide a home for parties, community events and a meetings

An upgrade of the existing gym includes the arrival of several new pieces of equipment, as well as flooring and lighting.

Peter Burt, managing director of Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles, which runs the centre, said: “This latest development sees further first class leisure and fitness facilities coming to Chase Leisure Centre.

"It becomes only the second leisure centre in the country to take on ‘The Trip’ cycling programme, which is indicative of our ambitions to innovate in order to best serve our customers.”
