Residents group funding is cut
A £20,000 a year funding grant for a tenants group which was accused of 'excessive spending' and alleged ‘inappropriate language’ regarding immigrants has been axed.
Cannock Chase District Council decided at a cabinet meeting on Thursday to cut off £20,000 a year given to Chase Tenants and Residents Federation.
The Federation was created to ‘represent the voice’ of various residents groups across the area in 1995.
However, an independent review was carried out into the association at the request of the council ahead of Thursday's meeting, which found that the groups spending was considered 'excessive' and that there were concerns over members conduct.
Bosses have now agreed to cease the funding and will look towards using social media and magazines to connect with residents.
Councillor George Adamson, leader of Cannock Chase District Council, thanked the group for their work but said the authority needed to 'move into the 21st century'.
He said: "The cabinet has taken the decision to withdraw the funding for the Chase Tenants and Residents Federation.
"The group has done a good job for more than 20 years but we now need to move into the 21st century.
"We hope to use the money more effectively to connect with our residents."
The Chase Tenants and Residents Federation did not want to comment on the decision.
