Five Ways Island in Heath Hayes is a nightmare for motorists, and has been highlighted as one of the most damaged roads in the district by our sister title The Chronicle’s campaign to shine a spotlight on the worst pot hole hit areas.

The number of complaints issued to Staffordshire County Council has soared in less than two months.

In March there were still 38 outstanding reports of potholes on the roundabout. As of this week that number had risen to 59 complaints including the stretches of road directly leading up to it.

But now it has emerged the council is to invest £220,000 this summer to resurface the road and replace damaged kerbs. The work is scheduled to start in July and last five weeks.

Cannock Chase District Councillor Colin Lea who represents Heath Hayes said: "It is about time.

"Let's be honest. Five Ways Island is disgraceful, but it is not the only area that needs money spent on the roads. There are lots of bad roads in the area.

"In general the roads have been neglected, not for the last five years but for the last 20. Not enough has been spent on the problem."

But Councillor Lea did not lay blame at the foot of highways authority Staffordshire County Council and said while there would be disruption it was good news the roundabout is to be resurfaced.

He added: "I think there has just been a lack of money. I am not particularly blaming any particular person or party.

"Now there is some work being done but there needs to be more.

"Too much money is spent on ramps when that tarmac could be used to fill in potholes.

"But I think I can speak for all of my constituents and say they want the roads improved. If that means a little bit of disruption then it is a shame.

"But you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs."

James Bailey, head of highways at the authority said: “This particular scheme is included in our forward maintenance program for completion during 2017/18. The work includes resurfacing of the road, improvements to the drainage system and replacement of damaged kerbs.”

The council's website states: "We will shortly be carrying out significant works in Cannock Road, Heath Hayes (Five Ways Island) to start work on a £220,000 investment in the local area.

"Our team will be replacing damaged kerbs and resurfacing the carriageway at the Island that serves Cannock Road, Hednesford Road, Norton Lane and Wimblebury Road.

"Access to properties and businesses along the length of the works will be available throughout the job although may be restricted at times as we carry out these essential repairs outside each property.

"We take care to make sure that work is completed with the minimum of disturbance to the local community but as with any major works, some minor traffic delays may occur."
