Ten-year-old Courtney-Jane Chapman, who attends Chase Terrace Junior School, will bravely part with her shoulder-length locks at a charity event on August 9.

Her dad Mark Chapman said she made the generous decision herself as she was determined to help poorly youngsters who were being treated for cancer.

"We have had a few family members who have had cancer and she just came to me and her mum and said she wanted do it and donate her hair so it can be made into a wig," he said.

"We were a bit reluctant at first but she had made up her mind and wanted to do it. She's very brave."

Courtney has been collecting money for the charity and so far she has raised more than £700 for Cancer Research UK and Mark said she was receiving more donations towards her fund every day.

They have decided to hold a fundraising event at The Firs Working Men's Club to help boost her total and family and friends will attend on the day to cheer own as she undergoes her transformation.

"We've had a lot of local businesses donate prizes for the raffle and we are doing a tombola," said Mark.

Courtney, whose hair is usually brown when she's not experimenting with different colours during the school holiday, has ordered herself a wig to wear following her charity challenge.

"She wants to cut off the first bit of her hair herself and then we have a family friend who is hairdresser and is going to cut off the rest for her," he added.

Mark said he was "very proud" of his daughter for wanting to help others and said she was looking forward to the big day.
