Mother Kirsty Cadman was walking to school in Springhill Road, Burntwood, with her two youngest children Hollie, aged eight, and four-year-old Kyle, when the family were struck by a car.

The 31-year-old, who lives nearby just off Baker Street, said all she could remember was waking up and finding her children “scattered down the road”.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said the driver of the car apparently suffered a medical episode just before the collision happened.

Now, due to being in hospital with her neck partially broken, Kirsty has not been able to see her badly-injured son since February 14.

She said: “We were just walking, my children were holding my hands, and a car came from behind.

"All I remember was waking up and finding my children scattered down the road.

"I tried looking for my children – my boy was a few feet in front of me, and my daughter was at the bottom of Springhill Road by the front of the car.”

Hollie escaped with cuts and bruises

While Kirsty’s daughter Hollie escaped with just cuts and bruises, Kyle suffered a number of injuries.

“He’s being cared for by his dad,” said Kirsty, a catering assistant at Chase Terrace Technical College.

"He was in hospital for some time, and has a plaster cast from his waist to his thigh.

Kyle suffered extensive injuries following the crash

"They took him home as they have a special hospital bed at home they can give him, but we don't have a seat to bring him in the car so he hasn't seen me as I'm still in hospital. I haven't been able to leave the bed since I arrived. I haven't seen my husband either.

"This has really affected us as a family. I have an older son too who has special needs so he is being cared for by his aunties and grandmother."

West Midlands Ambulance Service had originally said that the trio were "treated for injuries not believed to be serious" but Kirsty, who has four children in total, said this was not the case.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said the wording used following incidents such as this had to be chosen "very carefully".

A girl, who was a passenger in the car, and another female pedestrian were also hurt in the crash and were discharged at the scene.

Kirsty and her two children were taken to Walsall Manor Hospital, where Kirsty remains.

The driver was taken to the same hospital. Her condition is not yet known.
