The bloke initially claimed to have an Italian driving license - but upon further inspection, Staffordshire Police reportedly uncovered that he had no licence at all.

Officers also allege that the driver had been illegally staying in the UK after being refused asylum in 2007. He has since been handed over to Border Force.

In a post shared to X (formerly, Twitter) on February 7, Staffs RCT said: "A story of woe and chances. This driver told us he had an Italian driving licence. Turns out he's never held a licence.

"He's also a failed asylum seeker since 2007, #arrested. He will now be handed over to @UKBorder who are keen to have a chat."

The arrest was made as part of Operation Lightning - a dedicated operation focusing on road safety, helping to make Staffordshire's roads safer.

It aims to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on the roads and to disrupt and deter criminals from using the road network.
