M6 southbound in Stafford area will be closed overnight after morning crash

A driver trapped in his vehicle had to be cut free after a crash between two lorries at around 9.40am. Fire crews used specialist equipment to free him. He was taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital where he was said to be in a serious condition.

A diesel spillage from the vehicles caused the closure, which National Highways say will remain overnight.

It said: "Police investigations at the scene are ongoing and a hydro blaster is also treating the carriageway.

"Emergency resurfacing is required before the carriageway can be reopened safely so the road will remain closed overnight.

"Drivers are advised to listen to the latest traffic reports and check their routes to avoid delays."

Traffic is advised to follow the hollow square and exit the M6 southbound at junction 14 and take the exit to the A34 eastbound, then continue on the A34 until the roundabout with the A513, turn right and continue on the A34 southbound into Stafford then continue on the A34 around the town of Stafford until the Queensway island with the A449.

Here a second diversion will be picked up due to a local authority closure of the A449. This diversion will continue on the A34 south until the junction with Silkmore Lane, then join Silkmore Lane southbound and continue onward to join the A449 Wolverhampton Road to continue onward and re-join the M6 at junction 13.

It said drivers can also consider leaving the M6 at junction 15 and taking alternative routes from there.
