Special constabulary helps Staffordshire Police amid coronavirus crisis

Volunteers have spent more than 9,400 hours helping Staffordshire Police amid the coronavirus crisis.

Special constables in the county have contributed the equivalent of 29 full-time officers per week since lockdown started.

The special constabulary – which has 146 active officers currently – is helping to ease the pressure on Staffordshire Police and help tackle community issues in the area.

The volunteer force is made up of people who wear a uniform and have full police powers on duty.

Special Sergeant Matt Hickinbottom, based in Wombourne, is among those who have stepped up amid the pandemic.

Overall, special constables in Staffordshire have contributed 25,372 hours so far.
