Detective Inspector to run London Marathon in memory of colleague's daughter
A detective inspector is swapping his police badge for running shoes for one day only as he embarks on 26-mile journey around the capital for charity.
DI John Quilty, from Staffordshire Police, is running the London Marathon to raise money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital in memory of his colleague’s daughter who died in 2015.
Detective Constable Emma Hill’s daughter Milly suffered from an extremely rare congenital condition and was admitted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital for heart surgery in 2015.
But despite the best efforts of staff, Milly suffered complications after the operation and died the night before her second birthday.
John, 54, who is running at such a long distance for the first time in his life, has been getting his hands wet and washing cars as a way of raising cash but will run for the money on April 28.
He said: “Running the London Marathon has always been on my bucket list. It’s a sporting achievement and I wanted to both challenge myself and raise some money at the same time for a good cause.
“I want to help give a little back to such a fantastic hospital that has supported so many children across the country.”
Emma said: “Raising money for charity has been such a huge part of my life and everyone has been really supportive.
“Doing the fundraising is almost a way of keeping Milly in my life. We almost lived in Birmingham Children’s Hospital for two years and now I do all sorts to help out.
“I’m so pleased with the support everyone has given me.”
