Amazon to deliver train station improvements
Online shopping giant Amazon has pledged to take over maintaining two Staffordshire train stations.
The company, which has ties to the region through its Rugeley fulfilment centre, has joined in with London Midland's 'Adopt a Station' programme, vowing to enhance the appearance of both Rugeley Town and Rugeley Trent Valley stations.
The decision has been praised by MP Amanda Milling and already users of the station can see the benefit of the scheme, with new floral displays put up for all to see.
In recognition of Amazon’s support, Mrs Milling joined Faye Lambert, head of community rail at London Midland on Friday, to present the station adoption team with a brand-new station adoption plaque.
Amanda Milling MP said: “I am delighted the stations have been adopted by the local Amazon fulfilment centre and it is a pleasure to join them for the opening ceremony.
"The investment in the stations will make them more welcoming to visitors and commuters and is a great example of what businesses can do to support their local community.”
Scott Wharton, Amazon’s Rugeley general manager, said,the company was 'proud' to be involved with improving the station.
He said: “We are proud to be a part of making our local train stations a more welcoming place for the residents of Rugeley and visitors to the area.
"I look forward to seeing the flowers bloom over summer.”
As well as benefitting from Amazon's investment and support, users of the Rugeley Town station are set to benefit from work to improve access to the site as part of a £35 million spend from Staffordshire County Council to improve the county's roads.
Faye Lambert, head of community rail at London Midland said she hopes Amazon inspires other companies to help improve their local train stations.
She said: “The sponsorship and hard work of the Amazon team will breathe new life into Rugeley’s stations, and we are proud to have the company as a part of our local community.
"We hope that this project inspires others to take the initiative and make a positive impact in their town by working together and enhancing the appearance of their local stations.”
