Travellers moved off the site in Bursnips Road, Essington, on Friday

Around 50 caravans pitched up on Bursnips Road, in-between Sneyd Lane and the M6 motorway bridge on Wednesday night.

Their numbers swelled to around 80 yesterday - but by 5pm they had left the site which is currently being developed into a new cemetery.

Essington councillor David Clifft praised the swift action of the police and South Staffordshire Council.

He said: "I was informed about the encampment at 9.45pm on Wednesday evening. I immediately set legal action in motion and contacted the landowners.

"By pulling all the agencies together in such a short time, we were able to deal with the issue swiftly.

"The notice we served on them said they had to go by 11am today but after talking with them they decided to move on."

Mr Swift added the group had not left must rubbish behind and that skips had been provided.

Meanwhile Walsall Council has confirmed an unauthorised encampment on King George V playing fields, Bloxwich.

It said it was working with the police to secure the land as soon as possible.
