Lichfield Cathedral evacuated amid 'suspicious incident'
Lichfield Cathedral was evacuated by police after claims of a 'suspicious incident'.
Staffordshire Police confirmed management at the cathedral had prompted everyone to leave the historic venue at lunchtime before officers arrived.
The force declared they are not aware of any 'specific threat' but have urged people to report any concerns.
Images on social media showed a number of police officers and vehicles at the scene.
The force later confirmed that that after an investigation 'nothing of note' had been found. They thanked the public for their vigilance and support.
The force said: "We want to thank the public for their vigilance and support following an incident at Lichfield Cathedral today.
"We were called at lunchtime after a member of the public had concerns about the behaviour of a visitor to the site.
"She quite rightly reported those concerns to the site management and the police, which resulted in a detailed search of the site by police.
"We deployed specialist search trained officers, supported by our trained police dogs trained to detect explosives.
"This detailed search confirmed that there was nothing of concern at the location.
"We want to remind our communities that the current threat level is severe, which means an attack is highly likely, and people should always report any concerns to the police so we can assess the information and put in place the most appropriate response.
"More details of who we deal with the current threat are available on the Staffordshire Police website.
"We want to thank those affected by the cordon and search in the area for their great cooperation this afternoon, and we urge the community to remain calm but vigilant."
A spokesperson for Lichfield Cathedral said: " We support Staffordshire Police in asking the public to report any concerns they may have to staff at the cathedral or the police, in view of the current national threat level."
