The Stafford-born actor, aged 54, has appeared in a promotional video for the second ever Staffordshire Day celebration where he outlines all that is good and great about the county.

Speaking from his pub the Plume of Feathers in Barlaston, the former Men Behaving Badly star who is now in ITV's The Good Karma Hospital, said: "We're surrounded by the canal systems which were put in by James Brindley in the 18th Century and previous, to supply everybody all over the country and now they are great for tourists narrowboats, and barges up and down the river.

"I used to love running wild as a kid with the dogs and whatever on Cannock Chase and Seven Springs which has some of the most beautiful places on earth."

Morrissey has thrown his weight behind this year's Staffordshire Day, which takes place on Monday, May 1, following on from last year when Robbie Williams, from Stoke-on-Trent, made a special video message.

Mark Winnington, economic growth chief for Staffordshire County Council and vice chair of event organisers Destination Staffordshire, said: "We all know what a wonderful county Staffordshire is to live, work in and visit, with something for everyone.

“We are all looking forward to our second Staffordshire Day on 1 May which gives us a great opportunity to tell the world what a great place Staffordshire really is.

“Plans are going incredibly well with more and more events and activities being added each day.

“Last year we had a special video message from Robbie Williams and now it’s great to have Neil’s backing too.

“We want everyone to be able to join in the celebrations, so the more people that know about it the better.”
