Pic taken: 17/07/2020) - A 27-year-old man has lost his life after he was hit by a car on Newton Road in West Bromwich on Thursday evening. The man was hit on a dual carriageway that connects West Bromwich and the Newton area of Birmingham and is popular with walkers. Off duty nurses heroically performed CPR on the man before paramedics arrived. Amy Elizabeth who witnessed the aftermath said on Facebook: ‘… I saw a lady performing CPR and I pray to god he survives. I can’t stop thinking about it xx’ A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a MERIT trauma team were sent to the scene. ‘On arrival ambulance staff found off duty nurses performing CPR on a pedestrian, a man, who had reportedly been involved in a collision with a car. ‘Ambulance staff took over resuscitation efforts, administering advanced life support, but sadly nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead on scene a short time later.’ West Midlands Police closed the road as Collision Investigation Officers examined the car which had a huge dent on the bonnet and a smashed windscreen suggesting it was a high speed impact. The road is restricted to 50mph, however speed cameras were switched off years ago to save money on old film camera technology. Jeanette Austin also commented on Facebook saying: ‘I live right on the Newton Rd by the park and if you could hear the speed that motorcycles go along here at night I'm surprised there aren't more accidents!!’ Police photographed the scene and took 3D images of the road to analyse. West Midlands Police released a statement: ‘We are appealing for information following a fatal collision in West Bromwich last night (16 July). ‘We were called to Newtown Road shortly before 9.30pm following reports a pedestrian was struck by a car near to the junction of Wigmore Lane. ‘The man, aged 27, suffered serious injuries and sadly died at the scene.  ‘His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. ‘The driver of the grey Audi A7 stopped at the scene and is assisting officers in their investigation.’ DC Jamie Simon from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: ‘We are currently reviewing CCTV and our enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of this collision which sadly resulted in a man losing his life.  ‘We want to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or anyone with dashcam footage who hasn’t yet got in touch.’ Anyone with information has been urged to contact 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting log number 4636 of 17/07/20. The Audi driver stopped at the scene and is assisting with West Midlands Police's investigation.

Det Con Jamie Simon, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “I am trying to trace the driver of a silver four door saloon car that was overtaken by the grey Audi A7 shortly before the collision.

"We think they are a key witness and we need to hear from them.

“It’s possible the car was a Mercedes and it was travelling on Newton Road coming away from West Bromwich at about 9.22pm. It had joined the road from Holyhedge Road and would have been overtaken by the Audi in the immediate moments before the collision."
