The feral cats were spotted by workers at a firm in Shaw Street, in West Bromwich, just before the crushing machinery was about to come down on the waste.

The workers were able to quickly stop the process and immediately called the RSPCA. Inspectors Vicki Taylor and Dawn Burrell were sent to the scene and staff told them they had seen five kittens in the cardboard.

With the help of staff at the company, the inspectors got to work emptying the skip of all the card – so they could locate the five kittens and rescue them.

All five kittens, aged around five weeks old, and were taken into the RSPCA care following the rescue on Thursday, May 28.

The kittens are now doing well with a foster carer – and when they are old enough, they will be rehomed by the charity.

Inspector Taylor said: “It appears like the mum had decided to set up home with her kittens in the waste recycling skip because it seemed safe and warm and she must have left them.

“It was just so lucky that the workers spotted the kittens when they did as they really were seconds away from being crushed.

“Staff at the company were great in helping us rescue the kittens and I am pleased to say they are all doing well and will be ready for re-homing soon.”
