Igor Malka fell from a scissor lift while working at the University of Birmingham in January.

The 62-year-old suffered serious injuries and later died in hospital, following the fall on January 7.

The father-of-three, from the West Bromwich area, had been working on a building site at the university campus, off Edgbaston Park Road.

His daughter Julija, speaking on behalf of the family, said: "He was a very kind man, very well-liked and well-respected by everybody who knew him.

"He had a great sense of humour and was a real hard worker - all of his family are so very proud of him."

Mr Malka, who was born in Kostroma, in Russia, moved to Lithuania when he was 22 years old, where he served in the forces for 15 years, before coming to the UK in 2013.

Julija added: "During all his life Igor was very good husband, and always cared deeply about his beloved family.

"That is why he decided to move to England, to look for better opportunities to find a good job and be able to take better care of us all."

A second man who suffered serious pelvic injuries in the incident was released from hospital last week. He is now recovering at home but will require further treatment.

A spokesman from West Midlands Police said: "Our enquiries are continuing and we are working closely with the Health and Safety Executive."
