The man, in his 30s, was found lying on the road in Trinity Way with serious injuries after being hit by a silver Renault Clio at about 1.40pm today.

The victim was treated by paramedics at the roadside but nothing could be done to save his life and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested by police on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.

He will be booked in to police custody, and questioned in due course.

The Clio has been seized for forensic analysis, and Trinity Way is currently closed in both directions to allow for an investigation to take place.

After the crash people sat outside the Island Inn Pub rushed to help the pedestrian, a barmaid who did not want to be named said.

And a resident said drivers "belt it up and down the road".

The woman who wanted to remain anonymous added: "I've not known of any accidents and I've lived here for years. It's quite shocking to hear someone has died.

"The drivers seem to come up to the island and belt it up and down the road.

"We can hear them from our back garden."

Yellow cones were left on the road while the scene was investigated and officers were redirecting drivers and pedestrians.

Investigators are also appealing for those with dashcam footage to get in touch as part of the ongoing inquiry.
