40 jobs on the way as Aldi plans new West Bromwich supermarket
Aldi has unveiled plans to open a new supermarket in West Bromwich, creating more than 40 jobs.
The chain has lodged a bid to take over the former Staples store, in Tildasley Street, near Oakwood Park.
The move is expected to create 16 full-time and 30 part-time jobs.
The plans for the supermarket have been hailed as ‘great news for the town’ by West Bromwich Councillor Bawa Singh Dhallu.
He said: “I would definitely like something to open at that site in Tildasley Street, instead of leaving the site empty.
"It is definitely a suitable location for an Aldi supermarket to open there as there is plenty of ample parking.
"We need more and more businesses to come to Sandwell as a whole, as well as the town of West Bromwich.
“It’s very good news that it will create more than 40 jobs for local people. It’s great news all round for the area of West Bromwich.”
The plans, lodged with Sandwell Council, also include external alterations such as new store access, a loading bay extension, trolley bay canopy, and alterations to car park and landscaping.
If the plans are approved, the store will be open between 8am and 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
A design and access statement, submitted with the proposals, states: “The proposed development will strengthen the retail mix within West Bromwich, increase food store provision and help meet the retail needs of the resident local catchment area by enhancing consumer choice, in accordance with sustainability objectives.
“We believe the proposals represent a considered and sensitive response to the constraints of the site.
"The Aldi, ‘deep discount’ retail store provides an amenity to the local area, which is currently lacking, along with the creation of local jobs.
"Aldi looks forward to becoming a considerate neighbour and a valued part of the local community.”
A decision on the plan is set to be made by Sandwell Council in the coming months.
