Parents and children, who are angry about the planned permanent closure of Moorlands Little Learners Nursery, at Moorlands Primary School, West Bromwich.

Bosses of Moorlands Little Learners Nursery, in West Bromwich, say that the closure comes from a decision made by the governing body.

It had been based at a mobile unit in Moorlands Primary School, in Winchester Road, for around 18 years before being moved to a church hall in recent months.

Around 25 children currently attend.

A petition has now been launched by parents who have branded the move as 'unacceptable'.

Vicki Clark, whose four-year-old daughter currently goes to the nursery, said that parents will do what they can in a bid to save it from closure.

She explained: "There had been a mobile unit on the site for years and then a decision was made recently that the children should not be staying in it anymore, so it moved.

"Then we were told last week that from September onwards they will not be doing anything further and they will be closing it down.

"They break up in three weeks for the summer holidays and all the children who thought they will be going there in September will not anymore. They have friends here and it will horrible for them to not come back.

"They have not searched all of the avenues of what could happen."

She continued: "The teachers have been great to keep it going in recent months but to drop this on us now is awful.

"We have local councillors involved and we've started a petition - we will do what we can."

Headteacher Kate Roberts said: “Following the amount of feedback we have had from parents and carers of children who were due to attend Little Learners, the school's governing body will be working with the council to look at the options for keeping this pre-school open."

Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for children’s services Councillor Simon Hackett added: “This is not a decision being taken by the council. We’re working with the school and the governing body to do what we can to make sure the nursery stays open.”

The nursery had formerly operated from one room in a mobile unit within the school grounds.
