The Knights of Wednesbury raised the cash for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Members presented a cheque to representatives from the charity on Morrisons' car park, in Wednesbury.

Jill Turner, a member of the club, said: "At Christmas they (the group) decided to raise money for the charity instead of sending Christmas cards.

"The idea was Linda Morgan's. She has had health issues and she thinks a great deal of the Macmillan nurses.

"She suggested instead of sending Christmas cards, we have a whip round and collect cash."

The group meets every Tuesday at Wednesbury Town Hall to enjoy lunch together.

The club, which was launched three years ago, can only accommodate 40 people at a time but plans are in the pipeline to hopefully expand in the future.

It was founded in a bid to alleviate isolation among older citizens in the community.

A total of £115 was raised for the charity and the cash will go towards helping patients that suffer with cancer.

Macmillan was formed in 1911 and has grown into one of Britain's largest charities.

It provides specialist health care, information and financial support to people affected by cancer.

Jayna Kawa, regional fundraising manager for Macmillan, said: "Macmillan is almost entirely funded by donations and simply cannot support the growing number of people who need us without help from local supporters like Knights of Wednesbury.

"The money they have raise will help Macmillan to support people living with cancer from the moment they are diagnosed, and for that, we are very grateful."
