Superhero Oscar celebrates last day of cancer treatment

Spiderman-mad Oscar Beardmore has been in a gruelling cancer battle for nearly a third of his life.

After undergoing chemotherapy for seven months, the brave three-year-old from Wednesbury then flew to Germany where he spent weeks enduring proton beam therapy.

But the youngster didn't let cancer defeat him - he even imagined his treatment would give him super web shooters just like his comic book hero.

Now Oscar's long, tough journey has finally come to an end. He and his overjoyed parents can now celebrate, after completing the last day of his cancer treatment this week.

And he has something special to look forward to after charity Make a Wish UK offered him his biggest dream - meeting Spiderman at Disneyland Paris this June.

Mother Cheryl Beardmore, age 42, said: "It’s been a long and gruelling 10 months but he's finally made it. We're all feeling very emotional to say the least.

"This is the day we’ve dreamt of since his chemotherapy started last summer.

"We never imagined back in June that we’d walk out of the hospital that day as cancer parents. Never in a million years thought it’d be our boy - who does?

"Our whole world was completely shattered and nothing else on this earth mattered other than getting Oscar well again. We were in a very dark place - but not for long.

"This little bundle of energy, our very own superhero wouldn’t allow us to wallow in self pity, he wasn’t going to let anything keep him down or let a silly thing like cancer get in his way.

"Oscar battled his way through intense chemotherapy treatment, always wearing his infectious smile. Not only has he fuelled us and kept us going these last 10 months but he’s also managed to capture the hearts of so many people along the way. Oscar you are the bravest and happiest of boys and we love you so much."

Superhero fanatic Oscar was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma in June last year, a rare form of cancer that affects the soft tissue.

Cheryl admitted there is still a 'way to go' in Oscar's journey, but that she and his father Mark are feeling 'very optimistic'.

She added: "The doctors are very happy with his treatment plan and they’ve said everything is looking favourably. We have to wait for his three month MRI at Birmingham Children's Hospital to confirm that he is now cancer free and we are very much looking forward to ringing the end of treatment bell in the next few weeks. We are feeling very optimistic."

The Beardmore family now are now working hard to raise funds for the hospital to thank staff for all the work they have done.
