Two cars and a van were involved in the smash on the southbound stretch between Junctions 9 for Wednesbury and 8 for the M5 just after 7am.

Fire crews from Walsall, Wednesbury and West Bromwich responded to the incident this morning – but delays have continued into this afternoon.

Two women and a 50-year-old man had to be freed from their vehicles by firefighters, while a teenager was also caught up in the incident.

Emergency services said the people involved had only suffered minor injuries and fire crews left the scene just before 8am.

Highways England said the crash left one vehicle on its side and 'significant damage' to a barrier at the side of the carriageway.

Two southbound lanes remain closed this afternoon with one lane also shut northbound – while emergency barrier repairs take place.

The Central Motorway Police Group and West Midlands Ambulance Service were also called after the crash.

Highways England said: "Crews remain at scene working hard to carry out essential emergency repairs, the barrier is detached and bent so cannot be left in its current state."
