Tipton phone mast ‘safe’ developers say
Developers who want to build a phone mast in Tipton say there is no evidence it will cause health problems.
Cornerstone and Telefonica UK Ltd has submitted health statements along with plans for a 20 metre high column supporting six antennas and two microwave dishes on the north side of Blakeley Wood Road.
Nationally, applications for 5G masts have led to a flood of fears they can cause cancers but in their submission to Sandwell Council, developers have said: “The World Health Organisation (WHO) noted that ‘to date, no adverse health effects have been established as being caused by mobile phone use.”
Recently, conspiracy websites made fake claims that masts are responsible for the spread of Covid-19.
In the West Midlands, over 20 masts have been vandalised and Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said the region appeared to be hotspot of attacks, with 38 per cent of the country’s 53 incidents happening here.
He said: “There is a totally unsubstantiated, ludicrous myth going around that 5G masts are radiating out Covid-19,” he said.
“That is truly ridiculous and false. However, a number of people, particularly in the West Midlands, have taken it upon themselves to cleanse us of this ill by attacking the masts.
“Anyone with good sense can see that at the present moment to our telecommunications system is absolutely vital.”
Telecommunications companies have said 5G can support and improve health services by allowing outpatient appointments and emergency consultations carried out remotely by video link.
In addition, connected ambulances will allow paramedic crews at accidents access specialist advice while still at the scene and live stream data as patients travel to hospitals.
