Firefighters tackle 50-ton Tipton waste blaze
Around 50 tons of waste went up in smoke during a blaze at a Black Country recycling plant.
Twenty firefighters tackled the flames at AB Recycling Waste in Bloomfield Road, Tipton, early this morning.
Residents in the area were advised to keep their windows closed due to large amounts of smoke.
Marc Hudson, a spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service, said: "Four fire engines were there. It was a fire involving a recycling conveyor belt with approximately 50 tons of mixed recycling on fire.
"At the moment, crews will periodically go there to make sure there's no hotspots. The fire is completely extinguished.
"Firefighters were there at 7.30am this morning to do the damping down and turning over.
"We received three or four calls at 12.30am.
"They used the machinery on-site, the staff, to move the remaining unburnt products to stop the fire spreading, so to create a fire block.
"They've contained the fire inside to stop it and that was 15 minutes into it.
"We informed Network Rail of the smoke due to the Birmingham to Wolverhampton line and the Environment Agency – what's going to happen to the dirty water?"
The cause of the blaze is currently unknown.
