Firefighters battling open yard fire in Smethwick

Firefighters remain at the scene of an open yard fire which broke out in the early hours of the morning.

Crews found a large blaze on Booth Street, Smethwick at around 3.15am on Tuesday, after receiving reports of a fire in the yard of two factories.

The fire, which involved five large totes of scrap plastics, has since been dealt with, but fire crews remain on the scene while investigations take place.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire said: "We were called to a fire at a factor at around 3.14am this morning, The fire appeared to be in the yard of two neighbouring industrial units and involved five

"The fire covered an area of 20 metres by 10 metres and involved one hydraulic platform, one main jet, and several firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.

"Fire crews also had to force entry to one of the factory units to gain access to the fire."

Two fire crews, supported by units from West Midlands Police, remain at the scene while investigations into the cause of the fire continue.

The spokesperson continued: "Cadent Gas has also been in attendance to monitor gas lines, and police were also in attendance to assist with blocking access to Booth Street.

"At least two fire crews will remain at the scene to monitor any other hotspots, and fire investigators are also on the scene."
