Pensioner hit by taxi 'struck by overtaking Mercedes' near Smethwick temple
A pensioner was killed after being hit by a taxi as she was getting into her parked car after leaving a temple, an inquest heard.
The inquest on Surinderjit Kaur Saund was opened and adjourned until December 3 at Black Country Coroner’s Court yesterday due to an ongoing police investigation.
It heard 68-year-old Mrs Saund was walking towards the driver’s side of her car, in Waterloo Road, Smethwick, close to the junction with Sycamore Road, on October 3 shortly before 10pm.
Senior coroner, Zafar Siddique, said: "A white Toyota taxi and a black Mercedes were travelling towards her.
"It appears the Mercedes tried to overtake the other vehicle and collided with the front off side of the white vehicle sending it into her path.
"The black Mercedes vehicle stopped further up the road initially, then drove off."
Mrs Saund, of Heath Street, Winson Green, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The medical cause of death was listed as fatal head injury due to a road traffic collision.
Mr Siddique added: "Due to the on-going police investigation I adjourn the hearing to let the them make further enquiries."
He offered his condolences to the family of Mrs Saund, who were not present at the hearing.
A 22-year-old man has been released pending further investigation.
