Lucille Downer, 85, was killed when she was attacked by the dogs which got into her back garden in Boundary Avenue, Rowley Regis, through a hole in the fence on Good Friday.

Neighbours rushed to her aid after the dogs escaped at about 3.20pm but the 85-year-old was subjected to a “sustained attack” and was confirmed dead at the scene shortly afterwards.

A post-mortem took place on Wednesday, which concluded the cause of death as traumatic injury from dog bite.

Tests are still being undertaken to establish the breeds of dogs, which were tranquilised after the attack and seized by police before being “humanely destroyed”.

A statement from West Midlands Police on Thursday said: "The post-mortem examination concluded the cause of death as traumatic injury from dog bite.

"The breed of the dogs has not yet been established but an examination will be conducted within the next week."

A 43-year-old man alleged to be the owner of dogs was arrested after the attack but has since been bailed pending further inquiries.

A family tribute issued after Mr Downer’s death said they “will miss her dearly”.

Flowers were also left outside the great-grandmother’s home, while neighbours expressed their shock.
