Homes plan in bid to secure Dudley Golf Club's future
A golf club has revealed plans to build three large homes on the site in order to help secure its future.
The four-bedroom homes would be built on land south of the clubhouse at Dudley Golf Club.
The houses would be located close to bus stops on Portway Hill, if plans are approved.
It would also include a garage and three parking spaces for each plot.
John Jowitt, from PJ Planning, who is acting on behalf of the club, said in the application: “The finances provided as a result of development will help support the continuing operation of the golf club.
“This point was acknowledged in the pre-application response from the local planning authority, which stated: ‘We are aware that the club has financial difficulties and it is accepted that the loss of the golf course may result in the area not being maintained and the subsequent consequence thereof’."
Councillor Chris Tranter, who represents Rowley, backed the proposals.
He said: “They approached myself and my other colleagues about two years ago, and they were looking to sell-off land from the golf course to build a succession of homes because they were struggling financially.
“I don’t know if they got as far as planning permission but nothing has happened since.
“I think the golf club is a bit of a jewel in the crown for Rowley, to be honest.
“It’s a lovely oasis of green amongst a well built-up area of housing estates.
“I do go to the golf club to attend a meeting of the Quarry Liaison Committee and I whole-heartedly support it.”
