The swan was left hanging upside down after its leg was caught in the fence.

RSPCA inspector Boris Lasserre rushed to the scene in Churchbridge Industrial Estate, Oldbury, after a passer-by spotted the wounded animal.

The swan, which had its leg twisted through the wire mesh, is now recovering after it was rescued on April 19.

Mr Lasserre said: "It looks as though the swan has come into land and hasn’t seen the fence.

"He got his leg twisted through the wire mesh and was then hanging upside down.

"His wings were badly damaged where he’d been thrashing around. And I was really concerned he may have snapped his leg.

"I managed to calm him down, get hold of him and carefully twist him out of the mesh and free of the fence.

"And in some sort of miracle, the vets couldn’t find any serious injuries or permanent damage."

The swan is now recovering at a local wildlife rehabilitation centre, where staff say he is doing well.
