Workmen rescued by firefighters after falling into Oldbury pit

Workmen had to be rescued when they fell 10 feet into a pit after a cable snapped while they were working inside.

A total of 20 firefighters rushed to the Hawthorn Trading Estate in Oldbury today to rescue the men, who were lying at the bottom of the 8 metre-deep hole.

One man was helped out using a ladder after sustaining minor injuries, but the other worker was carried out on a spinal board by paramedics, having suffering back and knee injuries.

Both were taken to hospital by ambulance.

Crews from Willenhall, Smethwick attended along with the technical rescue team from Wednesbury and Bickenhill after the call was received at 10.14am

The West Midlands Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team was also sent to the scene.
