The Bradbury House Day Hospice closed in March following a reorganisation of 'end of life' care at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust.

The site, on Wolverhampton Road in Oldbury, is now being offered for sale through property agents SDL Bigwood.

James Carver, associate partner in the commercial department at SDL Bigwood, said: “This is a building where those terminally ill were cared for with love and dedication.

“It brought succour and support to patients and their relatives, but is now set to enter a new phase in its development.

“This is a rare opportunity to acquire a substantial property in an excellent and prominent location.

“There is considerable potential for alternative uses, subject to planning permission.”

With a gross internal area of 3,927 sq ft, it is situated between the junctions of Pound Road and Brandhall Road.

The property is described as "a substantial, two storey, red brick building on a site extending to approximately 0.17 acres".

The centre itself is freehold, while an adjacent parking area, capable of holding around 18 vehicles, is held on a long leasehold basis on a peppercorn ground rent, with a term of approximately 75 years remaining.

Mr Carver added: “Given where it is, and the possibilities for either residential or commercial refurbishment, we are expecting considerable interest.”

The closing date for offers is Friday, August 18 at 12 noon.

The closure of Bradbury House raised concerns about care for terminally ill people and their families in the area, but a statement from NHS Sandwell and West Birmingham CCG (clinical commissioning group) in December last year explained its reasons for the closure decision.

“The new End of Life Care service which commenced on April 1, 2016 provides 24 hour, seven day a week services to support patients to die at their preferred place of death.”

“The decision has been made to relocate services from Bradbury House from March 31, 2017, as we are unable to offer the range of services required to ensure responsive and quality day hospice care because of the limited size of the building.

“It is also a standalone site, which doesn’t offer access to a wider range of healthcare staff or accessibility for people with severe mobility restrictions. There are also health and safety concerns in relation to staff working on the site. Our proposals for the relocation of day hospice services from Bradbury House would provide the same services and a higher standard of care for patients and their families.”
