More than a dozen firefighters tackled the blaze at the house, in Broome Avenue, at about 7.10pm on Sunday.

The fire started in a downstairs living room and affected the majority of the semi-detached house, the fire service said.

The woman alongside a man from the house were taken to Sandwell Hospital with smoke inhalation, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, Jamie Arrowsmith, said:

"We have treated two patients for smoke inhalation, a man and a woman who were both taken to Sandwell Hospital."

The fire is believed to have started accidentally, West Midlands Fire Service said.

West Midlands Fire Service said crews from West Bromwich and Handsworth stations attended.

"A female and a dog were rescued and led to safety by fire service personnel," said the spokesman

"She was initially treated with oxygen and then handed over to paramedics.

"The cause is believed to be accidental."
