Metro extension could create over 100 jobs
More than 100 new jobs look set to come to Sandwell on the back of £450 million extension of the Midland Metro.
The jobs boost is part of a major expansion of the light railway creating 16 new tram stops on a 6.8 mile line between Wednesbury and Brierley Hill which is hoped to be completed in 2023.
As part of the scheme Midland Metro is planning to expand its present maintenance centre on Potters Lane.
The proposal has been welcomed by a local councillor who says it will bring much needed jobs to the area.
Councillor Elaine Costigan said both the maintenance centre plans and the new extension would benefit local people.
“This is great news, the centre is located in an industrial area and will create jobs we badly need, particular given the present situation.
“The links to Birmingham and Brierley Hill will be a boon for residents making it easier to get around and encourage people to leave the car behind and use public transport.
“So it good all round for jobs, for leisure and for the environment.”
A planning application to Sandwell Council by Midland Metro Ltd says the work on its Potters Lane site will increase maintenance and stabling facilities for new trams creating 108 jobs when completed.
In total the company hopes to invest £1.3 billion over the coming years tripling the size of the present system in two phases.
Work on the Brierley Hill extension began last year and will create five new tram stops in Sandwell linking the borough to Dudley and the Merry Hill shopping centre.
