"Geoff has served the residents of Friar Park in Wednesbury, and the borough of Sandwell for almost 30 years and he will be sorely missed bye everyone.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time."

Councillor Dr Ann Jaron, the current mayor of Sandwell, added: "Geoff Lewis has been a member of the council and the Labour Party for many, many years.

"Despite his great age and failing health, he was attending council meetings until very recently.

"He was respected by so many people as a man of great integrity and dedication, he will be greatly missed.

"I send my deepest condolences to his family."
