But Sandwell Council says it is nothing to worry about - just harmless algae and pond weed.

The pond at Dartmouth Park, in West Bromwich, had been carpeted by green algae with ducks spotted swimming through the thick covering.

A member of the public raised concerns on social media, writing: “I put a stick in it and it’s like thick, a gunk, really thick. Coated birds can’t even swim - what is this?”

However the green substance is a natural process that occurs during a change in the weather.

The algae and pond weed becomes visible and is seen in a bright and colourful green appearance.

There has been drastic weather recently with strong wind and heavy rainfall, which has brought disruption to parts of the region.

The weather has also made an affect on the pond.

A Sandwell Council spokesman said: “Algae and pond weed growth is completely natural and often happens at times of the year when the weather changes.

“We will inspect the pond and if necessary, take advice from the Environment Agency, but it’s nothing dangerous or unusual.”
