Elderly woman suffers 'life threatening' injuries after being hit by van in Wordsley

A woman in her 70s suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck by a van in Wordsley today.

She was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham following the incident on Lawnswood Road, near Sainsbury's, at around 1.15pm.

The Midland Air Ambulance flew in from Cosford but the patient was taken to hospital by land ambulance.

A doctor and critical care paramedic brought in on the air ambulance continued treatment on the way to hospital.

The victim was anaesthetised at the scene and her condition was described as "life-threatening" by police.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith said: "We were called at 1.17pm to Lawnswood Road to reports of a collision between a van and a pedestrian.

"A woman in his 70s was seriously injured. She was anaesthetised due to the seriousness of his condition and taken by land ambulance to the QE."

The road was closed into the afternoon.
