Funded by a grant of £144,715 from the government’s Libraries Improvements Fund, administered by Arts Council England, work has included installing VR headsets, improving the seating and creating more flexible communal space with moveable shelving and new flooring.
The library closed back in October 2024 whilst the work was carried out.
Since then, a limited library service has been in place at Christ Church in Lye High Street.
Operating under the Better brand, Lye Library, it is run by not-for-profit social enterprise GLL on behalf of Dudley Council.
Dudley Libraries Partnership Manager, Stephanie Rhoden said: “It’s made a real difference – breathing new life into what had become a rather tired space."
As well as offering a wide range of books for all ages, activities at Lye Library include Rattle and Rhyme sessions for infants, Story Time, Lego Club, computer assistance and ancestry-focused sessions.
Stephanie Rhoden, added: "Thanks to the extensive makeover, we now offer a friendly, bright and welcoming venue that has something for everyone.
"From sitting in a comfortable chair reading a paper or meeting friends to watching your child have fun in one of the many activities offered, Lye Library is a great place to recharge and relax.”
Councillor James Clinton, cabinet member responsible for libraries, said: “This refurbishment, which comes on the back of a similar investment in Brierley Hill Library will make Lye Library even more attractive to our residents.
"We’ve high tech VR headsets but books aren’t forgotten either with moveable shelving to allow us to make the most of the space.
"I hope the improvements will make it even more popular with users of all ages.
“I’d also like to thank Christ Church who provided a space for a pop-up library service while the work was underway.”
