Arrest as woman dies after being hit by car on pedestrian crossing in Stourbridge

A driver has been arrested after a woman was killed when she was hit by a car in the Black Country.

The 59-year-old pedestrian died after being hit by a silver Vauxhall Insignia on Brettell Lane in Stourbridge at around 6.55am.

A 37-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been taken into police custody for questioning.

Brettell Lane was closed after the incident happened at the main crossroad with Audnam and Platt Street.

Sergeant Alan Hands, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "A woman has tragically died and our thoughts are with her family and friends. It’s devastating to lose a loved one at any time, but always feels even more distressing near Christmas.

"We’re working to establish the circumstances leading to this collision and I would urge anyone with information, particularly those with dash cam footage, to come forward."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "On arrival we discovered one patient, a woman, who was the pedestrian.

"She was treated for multiple serious injuries before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital on blue lights and sirens."

Three ambulances, a paramedic officer, a BASICS doctor and Midlands Air Ambulance critical care car attended the scene.

Buses were diverted and police urged motorists to avoid the area, saying at 8am that the junction would be closed for several hours

The number 6, 16, 17, 17A and 57 National Express buses were affected.
