The crematorium will close on Friday, July 31, and will reopen at the start of December, it has been revealed.

The works will see the cremators at the South Road site replaced with machines being installed to accommodate larger coffins. A small extension to the crematory will be built on the side to accommodate the new cremators.

The seating capacity within the chapel will also be increased, and a new canopy built at the front. A number of other improvements are also being carried out.

Councillor Ian Kettle, Dudley Council's cabinet member responsible for crematoriums, said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this closure – but it is imperative the cremators are replaced this year.

"Cremations will continue at Gornal Wood throughout the closure, and the work at Stourbridge will not affect burials taking place in the cemetery there."
