'It was mayhem': Stourbridge family caught up in 'absolutely horrifying' Pontins ceiling collapse
A family from Stourbridge have spoken of their holiday horror after the ceiling collapsed at Somerset holiday park.
The family were staying at the Pontins Brean Sands resort, in Burnham-on-Sea, when the incident unfolded on Wednesday night.
A number of people suffered minor injuries when the roof collapsed in the entertainment room at the holiday park at around 6.30pm, police confirmed.
The family of four, who live in the Stourbridge area, said the ordeal was 'absolutely horrifying'.
Mother Katie Allen said: "We arrived on Monday for our holiday. We got into the main hall about 6pm and were just getting settled for the night's entertainment.
"My partner's daughter was on the dance floor and a large number of other children dancing. I remember hearing an extremely large cracking sound and froze.
"The next thing I knew was what I originally thought was the entire ceiling falling down directly in front of me and seeing my three-month-old son's pram overturned under some of the debris and my partner screaming his name.
"He got him out and was settling his screams when I made a frantic dash for the small hole underneath the rubble to crawl underneath to see where his daughter was. Thankfully she was uninjured just distressed.
"I grabbed another very young girl and we ran for the nearest exit. I managed to locate the girls father.
"People were screaming and crying everywhere, it was mayhem. So many parents scrambling over the rubble looking for their children.
"I know a number of people were stuck but I believe they were removed fairly promptly. Absolutely horrifying.
"My son had a minor head injury and we were discharged by paramedics and left the resort to go home as soon as we were allowed to leave."
Emergency services, including police, ambulance , the air ambulance and the fire service, were called to the scene.
A spokesman from Avon and Somerset police said: "Shortly before 6.30pm we were called to Brean Sands Holiday Park following reports a ceiling had collapsed inside a building.
"A number of people suffered minor injuries in the incident but thankfully no one was seriously hurt."
Police also confirmed that the Health and Safety Executive have been informed of the roof collapse.
