Halesowen is set to pay tribute to its heroes once again as the annual remembrance event at The Shell, located at Shell Corner, approaches.
This poignant occasion will take place on Friday, November 8 at 7 pm, with a growing number of community members expected to attend.
Organised by Halesowen North Councillor Stuart Henley the remembrance event has seen increasing attendance year on year, illustrating the event's significance within the community.
The concept for The Shell originated from Henley’s vision to create a space for remembrance and reflection, culminating in the installation of the striking structure at Shell Corner.
The name "Shell Corner" pays homage to a historic shell that once stood near the current traffic island, which was mistakenly sold for scrap in 1974.
The installation of new The Shell has become a symbol of remembrance and community spirit, inviting residents to honour those who have fought for their freedom. In 2023, the area around The Shell was further enhanced with the addition of steel figures, designed to commemorate not only military personnel but also the broader narrative of peace and remembrance.
Councillor Henley said: "Each year, we gather not only to remember those who have served our nation but to celebrate our community's resilience and unity. The stories we share and the memories we honour help to weave the fabric of our shared history.
"As the date approaches, the anticipation is palpable within the Halesowen community. Attendees are invited to bring their own stories, reflections, and family legacies to the event, ensuring that each remembrance is personal and meaningful."
He added: "The evening promises to be one of togetherness, solemnity, and perhaps even hope for a peaceful future. Whether it is the echoes of past sacrifices or the enduring commitment to building a cohesive community, this year’s remembrance event at The Shell is set to carry the weight of history while igniting a spirit of camaraderie that resonates throughout Halesowen."
